Martinengo (Da) Giovanni Leonardo

  • He was the first one to be called “liuter” in Cremona. He is known only through some documents found in the Archives of Cremona. He was Moisè's son, a jewish man, but he converted to Christian religion. He was probably from Martinengo, a village situated in the province of Bergamo. There is no documentary evidence of any of the instruments he made. He was supposed to have been Andrea I Amati's teacher, but there is no documentary evidence of this fact. He worked during the second and third decades of the XIV Century.
