Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Sabbioneta

The previous sacred building depended on the parish church of Casalmaggiore (CR), but in the mid-16th century Duke Vespasiano Gonzaga decided to rebuild the church according to the Renaissance canons adopted for the entire city. He entrusted the project to Pietro Martire Pesenti and the foundation stone of the parish church to be built was laid in 1562. In 1601 the church was already at the head of a vicariate and over the centuries it was enriched by numerous works of art. In the 18th century it was internally renovated based on a Ferdinando Galli Bibiena design. The frescoes of the lowered barrel vault of the nave, of the counter-façade, of the intrados of the chapels, of the dome, of the plumes and of the apse basin were created in 1768 by Antonio Bresciani from Piacenza for the figures and by Gaetano Ghidetti for the quadrature.
