The painting depicts a man playing the viola da gamba held on the knees

The stringed instrument, partially visible, has 6 strings, with rosette sound holes to curly brace and inlaid diamond-shaped, strikingly the instrument resembles than of anonymous Venetian in the Hill collection at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford (inv. D. 2:3)
