Gianpaolo Gregori - English translation by Cecilia Gregori

ANTONIO STRADIVARI L'arpa 1681 - The harp 1681

The author reviews what was written about the small harp built in 1681 by Antonio Stradivari (1644/49 - 1737), owned by the Musical Conservatory of S. Pietro a Majella in Naples. It is a 'unicum' among the approximately 750 surviving instruments of the Cremonese artisan and even if its client remains unknown, an in-depth documentary and bibliographical research has allowed us to reconstruct its ownership changes during the nineteenth century, while its exam 'de visu' allowed an accurate organological description and a plausible explanation of the symbolic meaning of the artistic carved decoration, attributed to Giacomo Bertesi (1643 - 1710), the most talented contemporary sculptor in Cremona of Stradivari.
