1582 - Apollo flays Marsyas alive

The scene represents the god of music Apollo flaying the Silenus Marsyas who had challenged him to a musical competition in which he was defeated. The instruments of the challenge - according to Ovid's story the aulos and the lyre - are placed on the ground behind the two protagonists.

Instruments represented:

Lira: designed in the classic theatrical shape, it has only 6 strings.

Aulòs: instead of the reed oboe, an instrument turned in wood in the shape of a bombard is represented.
