1595 ? - Violin "Henry IV"

The belly is of spruce, not original. The back is two-piece of maple, with fine flaming, ascending from the center joint, painted with the insignia of the king Henry IV of France and Navaree (Inside on the back is a handwritten inscription: Pro henrici quati Sacrario / Fecit hieronimus Amati anno 1595 / Primatii Pinxerunt alumni / Obtinui Marescalcus Bassompierre / cujus annos bis centum Domus servavit / Tandem requisivit J. B Cartier / e Sacrario Regis ludovici XVIII / et ejusdem acad[em]ie Primus Violinista / idem ad Carolum Gand alumnum / Nicolai Lupot Parisiis / factoris, restaurandi / causa[m] commisit.). The ribs are of wood similar to the back, with fragments of the motto DVO PROTEGI TVNVS. The scroll is original, with fragments of the gilt floral decoration. The varnish is golden-brown.

  • The dendrochronological analysis, made by John C. Topham (Surrey) in 2010, shows that the younger hole of the wood of the belly is dated 1637 and that it is strictly connected to the belly of a violin made by Andrea Guarneri around 1680.
