1597 - Viola

The instrument, probably a reduced tenor viol (viola da gamba), is attributed to Antonio Amati. The belly is two-piece of pine, of narrow grain widening towards the flanks, with four joints near the beaks. The back is of maple of medium curl, descending towards the right. The back is three-piece. One of them cut horizontally the bottom of the violin, near the upper bouts, that formerly created the typical “bump” of the viola da gamba. Near the beaks are four joints. The ribs, reduced in height, are of curl maple. The scroll is grafted onto a later peg box. The varnish is golden-brown.
