1500 (second quarter) - Portrait of a Musician

The young musician, seen in three-quarter, plays a bass viol da gamba held flat on his lap.

The bass viola da gamba, 6-string, offers organological particulars very interesting: the form has sloping shoulders and side cuts in C; the ribs (maybe a little too high) and the keyboard are two-tones; on the top of the keyboard there are tied keys; the bridge in stool is decorated and placed below the lower ends of the holes of resonance; the pegbox is visible only minimally.
