di Amati Andrea I
1539/77 - Violin "il Portoghese"
When the instrument was discovered in Portugal, only the back and ribs remained. The one-piece curly maple back bears conspicuous remnants of the royal insignia of King Charles IX of France. The maple ribs still bear gold remnants of the motto: PIETATE ET IVSTICIA, and on the CCs, a K with decorative flourishes. The soundboard, neck, and headstock are reconstructions by Claude Lebet.
